The account (user) blocking feature on platform X has now changed. News of this change initially surfaced in mid-October. But how does the X blocking feature work now? Will blocked profiles truly be able to view your account from now on?

The new account blocking feature for X has been activated.

The account (user) blocking feature has been a part of social media platforms for a long time. Typically, when a user is blocked, they lose the ability to view the profile and posts of the blocker. However, on platform X, this feature has been partially removed.

Accordingly, the X blocking feature will now only restrict interaction. If your account on platform X is public (not private or locked), profiles you have blocked will still be able to view your posts. However, due to the block, they will be unable to interact with your posts.
Additionally, these blocked accounts cannot send you DMs, tag you in photos, send follow requests, or add you to lists. On X, if your account is set to private, blocked users will not be able to view your posts at all. As it stands, posts from private accounts are only visible to their followers.
Here’s the information listed in X's Help Center regarding the new account blocking feature:

  • - If your posts are set to public, blocked accounts can still view them but cannot interact (like, reply, repost, etc.).
  • - Blocked accounts cannot follow you, and you cannot follow an account you’ve blocked.
  • - Blocking an account you currently follow will automatically unfollow it, and it will unfollow you as well. If you unblock the account, you will need to follow it again if desired.
  • - If your posts are set to private, they will only be visible to your followers, so blocked accounts cannot view them.
  • - Blocked accounts do not receive a notification about the block. However, if a blocked account visits the profile of the account that blocked them, they will see that they’ve been blocked. This is unlike the mute function, where muted accounts have no way of knowing they've been muted.
  • - You will not receive notifications from accounts you have blocked or from accounts that mention you in conversations initiated by blocked accounts, unless you follow the accounts that mention you. If you'd like to see all mentions, you can search for your username.

What are your thoughts on the changes to X’s blocking feature? Do you think it makes sense for blocked accounts to still see your posts and shares? We’d love to hear your opinions and feedback!
